May signifies a time dedicated to reflection and gratitude for the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Military Appreciation Month provides us all an opportunity to come together and express our honor and thanks for those who have served and continue to serve. This month Rocky honors Isaac Culbert, U.S. Army Aviation Officer, to share his story as a way to express our gratitude to all who have and are serving.
"I originally had no intentions of joining the military until I was faced with the decision on how to pay for college. Once that decision was made I joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in August of 2016. Shortly after in October, I enlisted into the Ohio Army National Guard as an O9R (Officer Candidate)."
What began as a want to go to college, turned into a long career with the Army as well as an understanding for how the Army is built and the crucial role everyone plays regardless of rank. In 2019, Culbert attended his first Air Assault school at Fort Benning, GA where he learned the foundation of aircraft sling capabilities, rig inspecting, and rappelling from a helicopter. He was fortunate enough to have earned the title of Honor Graduate.
Continued Culbert, "This was my first impression of the world of aviation and is a big reason why I continued to pursue that route in my remaining time in ROTC."
Following Air Assault School, Culbert completed Cadet Summer Training (CST) where he and others were evaluated on their leadership capabilities, decision making, and platoon level tactics. He took the knowledge learned at CST and was sent to South Korea as a part of a program known as Cadet Troop Leader Training. This program was designed to allow cadets to shadow an active duty officer and explore the life and training of a unit in the active component, and he was afforded the opportunity to train with an active field artillery unit there while shadowing a Medical Services Officer. At this time Culbert was torn between pursuing Medical Services and Aviation. As he entered his senior year at Ohio University, he ultimately chose to pursue the route of Aviation.
Today Culbert is the Alpha Company 2-4 GSAB Executive Officer (XO). Alpha Company is the VIP/C2 Flight Company consisting of UH60L Blackhawks. Their primary mission is VIP Air Movement, Command & Control (C2) missions, and Air Assault Operations. As the XO, he oversees ground maintenance, Tasking Orders, Air Mission Requests, Supply Operations, and again and most importantly, making the Soldiers the priority.
To Culbert, the biggest importance of being an Aviation Officer is understanding aircraft maintenance, continuing to learn about the aircraft and its systems, how to employ the aircraft, and ultimately how we can use our aircraft to support the ground force commander's mission.
We thank Culbert for his continued service and dedication to our country.
